Community Gardens Growing in Havenwoods

Adaptable garden build 17web

Havenwoods continues to support green infrastructure with our community garden partnerships  This year we completed our first senior accessible adaptable garden near the McGovern Park Senior Center.

This garden was build with the intent to reach the community elders and enhance their quality of life with a low impact physical activity and providing access to organic produce.  In time, it became apparent that our seniors needed adaptable gardens to feel safe while gardening.  With funding from the Helen Bader Foundation we were able to design and build waist high garden beds, with a reachable 2 feet of garden space across, and with built in stools for our mature adults to take a needed break while gardening. Our partners for our garden builds include:  Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Helen Bader Foundation, Milwaukee County Parks, McGovern Park Senior Center, Ground Works, urban agriculture advocate Jesse Hull, Milwaukee Job Corp, City of Milwaukee’s Earn and Learn, and the Havenwoods Resident Garden Committee.
